WHERE ARE WE HEADING

Insurgencies, ethnic violence, civil wars, conflicts and over 200,000 deaths in 2019 alone!

  • Afghanistan conflict
  • Yemen crisis
  • Syrian civil war
  • Kurd conflict
  • Iraq conflict
  • Libyan conflict
  • Kashmir conflict
  • Palestinian conflict

This list doesn’t even touch on intra-country “insurgencies”!

…and now a virus pandemic…

My personal belief is that with the current Coronavirus trajectory, COVID19 has the potential to overshadow all these world conflicts & flashpoints with fatalities.

So, what’s going on?

  • Is “nature” correcting this Century’s rife?
  • Is this a wake-up call to live within the resources that Earth has given us – not to destroy it?
  • Maybe this is meant to teach us forgiveness & humility towards fellow man – not hubris & greed?
  • Should we encourage education & knowledge for the betterment of mankind – not child labor?
  • If science is to lead the path for a better tomorrow, wouldn’t it be better to do it collaboratively and collectively – rather than conflict & strife?
  • Wasn’t religion meant for our salvation & give a purpose to life – not as a means to power?
  • Maybe the world needs to concentrate on “small government” to help citizens – not big business?  (also refer- https://dinshawavari.com/2019/06/14/what-does-a-government-do-for-us-%f0%9f%a4%94/)
  • Is this pandemic a test to measure the level of universal aid & collaboration – or politics getting the better of humanity?

…OR, maybe the answer is ALL OF THE ABOVE???

In a recent set of Tweets (https://twitter.com/aamirkazi60/status/1139408694653800448), our GM Aamir Kazi, @aamirkazi60, raises some very interesting & pertinent questions on the use of Social Media by employees of companies (for brevity I am only reproducing an extract of some of the questions he poses) –

Quote

In a recent row of […] the question is- does any organization has the right to spy on any employee’s private life?

  • Check on our thinking?
  • Do their employees represent organisations on their social media? What should be the criteria or standard operating procedure while on job?
  • Does any organisation has any contract letter saying “your social media accounts & personal emails will be checked for foul language and inappropriate content and if found guilty, disciplinary action will be taken against you”- you may lose your job?

UNQUOTE

My layman’s [non-legal] perspective on this is as follows-

  • Employers cannot spy on anyone (let’s leave that to our governments 😇)!
  • Saying that, nothing stops an employer having a clear policy BARRING anyone from using social media, the web and emails for personal use during office hours, unless that’s part of their job responsibility – and appropriate, legal action against the employee if found guilty. Why should an employee use paid, company-time for their personal jolly, regardless of using their own devices or company devices?
  • Equally, no employee represents an organization on social media, unless specifically authorized to do so…and this is where the viewer of the posts may not know whether it is an official post or not.
  • If we have to check on employees’ thinking, I think there are official psychometric tests which are normal and can be administered to employees, as long as these are fair and across the entire department or company- without singling out any one employee.

Employees have a responsibility towards their organizations too to ensure their social media actions don’t inadvertently reflect back on their company.

The starting course of action – which I believe to be morally & legally correct – would be for companies to technologically restrict social media & web access on company-provided devices.

How do your companies handle these phenomena?

What is a fair & reasonable policy for companies to tackle this media  channel in a growing technology world?

(p.s.- By the way, Aamir’s tweets were personal in nature 😉😏)

WHO wants to be a … POLITICIAN !?

February 8, 2019

I think you, not only, need to have some “balls” (pardon my French please!) but you can’t get emotional.

Let’s see-

Definitely, you should be able to take & accept criticism.  You would need to accept changes to your “grandiose” ideas and possibly “idealistic” thinking, which may have brought you into this field in the first place.

You need to have a Rhino’s “hide”!  We mortals can’t be public representatives.

Your family life is absolutely exposed!  Your every action, words (and thoughts!) are at the mercy of the public – you can’t hide behind “having a private life”!  Oh no, sireee bob!

You should be able to manage people & meetings (boy, will you have plenty of those!) and be willing to accept conflicting viewpoints & opinions (naturally, the buck stops with you so you have to make the final call).

You will be in 24/7 crisis mode !

You should be able to hold your own in the face of the media, the public, your own colleagues – let alone the opposition.

What other qualities does one need to be a public representative?

I could never be a politician or a public representative… I’m too emotional.  Could you???
